You can make a huge difference in a few deserving students’ lives by joining the Madrina Program.
Rotary E-Club San Diego Global (RECSDG) has been supporting, through small District grants, 16 students start a business and finish their high school education in Guatemala. This past year five of these students were chosen to go on to college programs based on their outstanding grades and have completed their first semester with flying colors. They did this despite Covid’s economic effect on their country’s health and economy.

These students have proven their worth – working together on businesses: creating reusable menstrual pads, ecological soap, and masks (see photos) to earn money for their tuition and to help support their families. The Rotary grants have also helped pay their tuition
Two more of the original 16 have been selected to go to college next school year. They had to work this year (50 hours a week) to support their needy families.
The new grant for FY 24-25 will help but $2000 only partially covers college costs for seven students. Besides yearly tuition ($1000 business or $1500 technology), students need internet access, computers, and book supplies.
One of the Madrinas graduates, Lilian Gonzales, is now offering Spanish language classes via Zoom. The income supports her, as well as raises funds for the Madrinas project. To sign up for conversational language classes, please click here>> or email Maureen (mventiduncan@gmail.com).

Enter the Madrina Program. If you are interested in helping by becoming a madrina (or padrino) you can support these seven students by underwriting a student or two by sending a contribution to RECSDG (note “Madrina Program”). By helping these students continue their education you empower them to get better jobs, to help support their families and community and rise up out of poverty.
